DRAGON STEPS is LIVE

Theatre Company Stan’s Cafe were commissioned to create Dragon Steps (an interactive theatre puzzle for all of the family) for this year’s Juice Festival.

Leah Chan (one of our Press Gang members) interviewed Director of Stan’s Cafe and the mind behind the Steps Series; James Yarker to find out more;

The ‘Dragon Steps’ (large vinyl stickers printed in the form of footsteps, handprints, object shapes and script fragments) will be placed in and around six venues across NewcastleGateshead;

BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art

Great North Museum; Hancock

Discovery Museum

Northern Stage

Dance City

The Sage Gateshead.

By following the steps, which hold performance instructions and clues to solving the puzzle, participants are encouraged to both uncover and star in their very own story, interpreting and performing the actions as they see fit, allowing them to solve the puzzle in their own way.

Initially inspired by electronic dance pads, which teach players to perform routines by following the footsteps as they appear, the solution to this puzzle can only be found by physically performing the instructions rather than observing from a distance… they don’t call it a ‘do-it-yourself’ theatre puzzle for nothing!

James Yarker, Director of Stan’s Cafe, explains “It’s a new idea that is intriguing and playful. Dragon Steps allows children and their families to let themselves go and re-imagine the world around them. The show starts when they start and they are completely free to rehearse or repeat the scenes and moments they like the best.”

The Dragon Steps story begins with a Dragon egg hatching in a museum full of curious children who then chase the Dragon and a get into a whole host of exciting situations. To uncover the rest of the story, Juice Festival goers will have to jump in and take part!

Dragon Steps will be in place throughout Juice Festival (Friday 26th October – Sunday 4th November) at the venues listed above, and is sure to be an event to remember.  You can download a Dragon Steps map with clues here.

Recommended for children aged between 5 and 10, and their families, this is an ideal opportunity to get involved with this contemporary activity celebrating creativity and the fantastic cultural environment provided by NewcastleGateshead.

ALSO; Don’t miss the Festival Finale – Dragons Parade, on Sunday 4November at BALTIC Square.
